BURGUNDY, France, may be the spiritual home of pinot noir, but New Zealand's cool climate pinot ranks among the best.
New Zealand's up-and-coming region, Central Otago (far south of South Island), may be a tenth of the size of Marlborough but its flagship grape produces some of the country's finest pinot noir. The WineTime Bars are the first gourmet nutrition bars infused with the anti-aging antioxidant resveratrol which is contained in the skin of red grapes. Resveratrol soared in popularity after positive coverage on major TV shows such as “60 Minutes,” “Oprah,” and a Barbara Walters special.Malcolm Nicholl, president of ResVez, Inc. said, “The WineTime Bar is a true healthy indulgence. It is at the convergence of the healthy products market and the gourmet food market. The consumer can get all of the benefits of resveratrol and other important nutrients while enjoying sinfully delicious chocolate bars. The Ralphs’ concept of placing these bars in the wine section is a superb idea. While the bars are a meal in themselves they pair very nicely with red wine. We are very excited that Ralphs decided to take this innovative approach.”The award-winning WineTime Bars contain more resveratrol than 50 glasses of red wine—without all of the alcohol. They are gluten free and dairy free, and suitable for vegans. They are high in fiber (7-8 grams) and low in calories (190). They also include seven extra “superfruits”—noni, pomegranate, goji, acai, mangosteen, cranberry and blueberry.doi: 10.1351/PAC-REP-10-01-05
Savoury and fruity with good concentration, Eradus 2009, Marlborough (pounds 13.27, www.corneyandbarrow.com) is deceivingly rich for such a pale cherry red. Fragrant with firm tannins and a long finish, this pinot would work just as well with a meaty fish as it would teamed with pan fried duck breast and a yummy sauce.
